Beach Clean-Up!

Saturday was our first monthly Santa Barbara Beach Clean-Up! The Mamas hung back with the kids at the playground while the Dads went out and picked up garbage on the beach. Once they came back with bags full, we all switched jobs and the moms combed the beach for trash while the dads watched the kids. When we were satisfied with a job well done, we all shared Adam's famous Bloody Mary's!!! Adam was even Earth-conscious enough to use reusable plastic cups. It was a great start to our Saturday and can't wait for the next one!

Giving Back

On Friday evening I got to volunteer my time and services to the Transition House downtown http://www.transitionhouse.com/. They help homeless families learn how to budget, help them get employment and get them back on their feet and living on their own again. I was supposed to give chair massages on Mother's Day weekend for some of the women (mothers) who live there, however the Jesusita fires got in the way so we had to reschedule. I was not feeling like I wanted to go, as I had worked a lot this week, was in need of some rest, but once I got there I realized that these women needed a break way more than I did! I was so glad I went. They were all very grateful and sweet women.
It was an eye opening experience. Most of these women had more than one child in tow, in fact I worked on a 21 year old who had FIVE children already. I can't imagine. Her mother, who I also saw, is 39 and has EIGHT grand kids! It really made me realize how lucky I am to have the family I do. It puts life back into perspective.

Blissful Evening

Today we decided to go to the Natural History Museum in Santa Barbara. They have a butterfly exhibit right now that was beautifly done. Owen was so good at not touching the butterflies, and staying away from their cut fruit! He had several butterflies that hitched a ride on his back for a bit, but my camera battery died and I didn't pack the spare. Oh well, we will have to go back soon. We missed a lot of great pictures. We hung out at the museum for about an hour until they closed.
Next we took a bottle of wine, some brie, crackers, apple and "Owen snacks" to the rose garden below the Mission. It was absolutely gorgeous outside! Not too cold, not too hot, sunny blue skies and a ton of kids running around playing together. We must have been there for at least 2 hours just watching Owen run around, making friends, and eating to his hearts content. He had a blast and was pretty tuckered out by the time we left.
Wish I had better pics to post. We will definetly do this again! I am thinking every other thursday night I want to do this, it was a fantastic night! Any friends who read this blog, please join us in two weeks!

Memorial Day 2009

Sweet Laith

Darling Gwendolyn.

Cyanne and her Daddy Tom.

After a quick trip to San Francisco Saturday, Adam and I were so happy to see Owen this morning! He was pretty happy and excited to see us too. I just love that complete family feeling. I can feel the love!

After a much needed nap, we took Owen to our friend's house for good times, great friends, fish tacos and margaritas (made by Adam). Owen played hard with his adorable little friends : ) We had a great time! Now it's my turn for my night time nap!

Type A Fashion Designer?

Lately Owen has been very critical of what Adam wears these days. Adam has to be wearing a hat at ALL times, AND it has to be facing the correct way with the bill in front. If he wears it backwards (which he sometimes does), Owen will point to his head and say "hat, hat, hat" repeatedly until Adam turns it around.

He does not like Adam wearing a sweatshirt of any sort either. He will whine and tug at his shirt until he takes it off. He even dresses him in the morning. He usually picks up a dirty shirt from the foor and insists Adam wear that specific shirt when he gets up. I told Adam he needs to start leaving clean clothes on the floor so he can at least wear something washed! I have no idea why he does this, I am just glad he doesn't do it with me! (knock on wood).

He also learned a new word this week that he says quite clearly; " Wine". : ) Then he says, "yummy" (I swear we did not teach him that it was yummy!)

Good Times

Sunday we had a fantastic brunch with our friends The Strongs at The Boathouse on the beach. Owen was well behaved and was waving and blowing kisses to Gwendolyn through breakfast. I don't think Gwendolyn minded the attention, as she was smiling every time I looked over at her.
After breakfast we let Owen run around the beach for a while. He was very interested in playing with two other boys who were building a castle. They were sweet and let him in on their games. I think all Owen wanted was a rock that they were burying in the "castle." When they were tired of playing in the sand, they handed the rock to him and said that he could have it now, they were done with it. Too cute!
Once we left the beach we took a short Sunday drive up through Hope Ranch....After Owen was done playing in the car first of course. We can't wait for this phase to end. He has to explore the car before and after we go somewhere EVERY TIME.

Yesterday I had a very long day of work, so my sweet husband (after watching Owen all day) decided to find a recipe I had just cut out of a magazine and make it for dinner. He made a pesto sauce with pistachio nuts, parsley and mint from scratch (super fresh and summery tasting), and served it with pasta, asparagus, grape tomatoes and an amazing salad on the side with the works! Adam is not one who enjoys cooking, so for him to take the time to go to the store, prepare the meal by himself while I got to relax, I was IMPRESSED and very thankful! (AND it was REALLY good!)

Giving Hoppa a ride on his giraffe in the morning : )

New Girlfriend

This morning Owen had his girlfriend Ella Mae come over for a couple of hours to play. He was so excited to have a friend here! He was very intrigued with "Mae Mae." He shared all of his toys and kept a close eye on his "stuff" while she played.
I thought I would save the best picture for last! He gave lots of hugs and kisses to Ella Mae, whether she wanted them or not! He would laugh and clap his hands after each kiss. SO CUTE!The date did end in tears sadly. Owen decided to stick his finger in her mouth for some unknown reason and she did what any toddler would do; chomp down! He was fine, after some hugs from Mommy and Daddy. He still has 10 fingers, I think he'll live!

Growing Times

Looking adorable this evening (in my bias opinion ; )

Combing his hair with his food covered fork
And this is what he looks like after Daddy has tried to get it out with a wet wash cloth. It's hard to tell in this picture, but his hair was orange.

OK, so I have been slacking here this week. We have been busy, and a little lazy, hence the lag in the blog.
Another new trick he has discovered is pulling a kitchen chair up to the counters to see what else he can get into at this new level. Not too happy about this one.

Lately Owen has been trying to delay his bed time for as long as possible. When I pick him up to put him to bed, he makes his whole body go limp and heavy so it's harder to pick him up. He pulls out extra books to read, he starts to get wound up and runs all over the place to show that he's not tired, he says he has to go "pee pee" when he doesn't, etc.... the list goes on and on. Once I actually get a hold of my little heavy noodle we walk through the house and say good night to everything we see, the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, Elmo, flowers, etc.... This seems to do the trick. I then put him in his crib and he seems satisfied. He usually goes right to sleep.

Happy Mother's Day!!

Happy Mother's Day, to all the Mother's who read this blog! I hope you all had a wonderful day! I was greeted in bed at 7:30 am with a bouquet of flowers given to me one stem at a time by Owen. Then he came in to hand me a small balloon tied to a tube of candy with a teddy bear wrapped around the tube....this was a bit more challenging for him to let go of. Every time he walked in our room he said "happy day" (he doesn't quite have "mother" down just yet ; ) He must have known that it was a day for me to stay in bed because this is the first time in a long time where he didn't litterally drag me out of bed by one finger saying "up, up" over and over again!

I got to stay in bed and read my book (The Time Traveler's Wife) and drink my coffee with Baileys that Adam so sweetly brought me. I also got a very sweet home made card with some beautiful crayon coloring in it : )

We went to the Yacht Club for brunch with my Mommy and David and his mom, Zena. Owen was an angel all day (well, as long as there was a plate of food in front of him anyway). We came home a few hours later and all took naps. I don't remember the last time I took a nap! It had to have been when Owen was still an infant and I was only getting a few hours of sleep a night.

For being pampered all day, I am pretty tired still! Good night!

Funny Boy

The fires are looking much better, and most of my friends and family who were evacuated are able to return to their homes that are still standing (as far as I know). So far about 80 homes were damaged or destroyed in this fire. It was looking like it would have been much more on Thursday night. Thankfully the fog rolled in last night and today was cool and damp with few winds which really helped the fire fighters get more under control.

OK, now moving on to the fun times we have had the past few days! First of all I must tell you that his new favorite thing to say is "no no" while he is doing something that he knows he shouldn't be doing. Yes, he is now mocking us. It's so hard to not laugh sometimes when I need to be stern. The funniest part is that he says it EXACTLY in the same tone and voice that I say it!
He is totally over his crayons (unless he is having fun dropping them by the fist fulls on the ground), and has moved on to markers. This is all fine with us as long as the markers stay on the paper. However, as you can see, he likes to draw on his face, and his hands as well. He will draw on his hands and then look at me and say "owie" so I will kiss it. Somehow he found a purple marker while we had our backs turned and decided to color all over the ottoman. Haven't had a second to clean it yet, let's hope it's easily washable. Now I remember why we decided not to buy white furniture.
He was really enjoying his banana waffles topped with yogurt here as you can see he is licking the plate clean! If you ever wondered what Owen would look like as a Mexican with a brown mustache, look no further. This is the result of a chocolate covered frozen banana. Adam and I were cracking up and just had to take a picture and share!
On Thursday we went swimming for the first time this season and he did really well. The pool was packed with kids, so he had fun watching the slightly older ones jumping in and splashing him. At one point he looked at me and said "pee pee" over and over again...I was hoping other people were not listening in on that one!

Yesterday Owen was given his own garden hose with the water turned ON at Nanna and Pappy's. Pappy was watering the garden after a really hot day. Owen thought this was pretty amazing! He was soaking wet from head to toe, but as happy as could be!
