First Day of Preschool

Owen has been more than ready for preschool for a while now. We were waiting for him to be potty trained, turn three, and adjust to Emily as part of our family. Now that those bases have been covered, he's ready! We also had a tough decision on where to send him. There are SO many preschools in this town, it's hard to know which one will be perfect for him, and us.

St. Andrew's was actually the first school we saw months ago when we started looking. We really liked it, and liked the idea that it's a co-op which allows us to work once a week in the classroom. We checked it out again a few weeks ago and we couldn't get Owen to leave, he was having so much fun. So that's where we decided to stay. He is going three days a week.

Last night we had some friends over for dinner. They have two adorable boys, Gabriel and Grayson. Gabriel will be 5 next week and is in kindergarten already. I think he was able to ease Owen into knowing that school will be fun (as Owen was having a lot of apprehension and fear of starting). Owen needed that extra boost of confidence.
This morning we had to wake him up at 7:30 and get things rolling! He resisted getting dressed until he gave in and insisted on leaving the house in his fleece pajamas UNDER his jeans and sweatshirt zipped up! It was the only way to get him out of the house, so we said "OK, but let's change when we get there." He agreed (yet did not follow through when we arrived). By the way, it was 110 degrees today, I am not exaggerating! Thankfully a teacher convinced him to change before it got to that temperature!
I have a friend whose adorable son, Connor, attends this school as well. He got to hang out with him in the sandbox when he arrived, which probably helped ease his nerves also.Emily was his cheerleader! She likes the school just as much. She has fun watching all the kids play. When it was time for us to leave him there, he was more than OK with it. No kisses or hugs, just a "bye" while he continued to play with his blocks and plastic animals. I was so happy it was an easy transition. I was grinning the whole way home and looking forward to a quiet house and time to get things done uninterrupted before I had to go to work. However, when I came home and I saw his breakfast plate still sitting on the table looking so lonely, I felt sad and missed him terribly.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to pick him up because I was still working, but Adam, Emily and Nana went to get him. He looked at everyone with big smiles and then said "where is Mommy?" So bummed I couldn't have been there. :( The director, Cindy told Adam that he had a great day, and the only sad part was when he started crying about 1/2 an hour after we left because he missed us. Heart break. She told him we would be there after lunch and showed him all the fun stuff they were going to do before lunch and he was fine. Little did he know I was thinking of him all day and missed him too!

When I got home, I got lots of hugs that melted right into me. He told me he "cried at school because he wanted to see me." I love that kid.

He still likes to be a "baby" when he is need of some attention (this is all Emily's fault ; ). Here is Owen trying to squeeze into her car seat on the couch when I got home. It's crazy that he used to fit in there just as snug as Emily is now.

Growing Girl

Our little Emily is growing so fast! Every morning I wake up and notice that she is heavier, fuller and taller! This last week she started rolling over from her tummy to her back! In fact, it's hard to keep her on her tummy because she automatically rolls over. It's pretty cute to watch.
She has a very strong neck and holds her head up high She has started drooling a lot and sucks on her hands when she gets the chance. Those teeth are going to be here before I know it!
She is smiling all the time now too. It melts my heart every time I see it. As soon as she sees us, she starts grinning ear to ear. Love her. She loves to grab on to whatever she can. It's usually the shirt of whoever is holding her, or her own dress, or most often it's her long hair she is pulling and twisting. (ouch!)

Owen is THREE!!

My little Owen had his 3rd Birthday party on Sunday. I can't believe how fast these past years have gone! We now have a tall, handsome, sweet, strong willed, funny boy who we enjoy getting to know every day. He is now potty trained, starting preschool next week and has a big boy bed. I am so proud of him!
Sunday's party was a zoo theme per Owen's request. We turned it into a pool party and it was a success! The kids had a blast in the pool as it was a beautiful hot sunny day, finally!! Here are a few highlights:
There were way too many pictures to post, I am working on posting them all on another photo sharing site.

Nana who helped make this party happen! Uncle Mark and Pappy made the board, and Adam drew and painted the lion for a bean bag toss into the lion's mouth. (I cut out the teeth : ) Nana made all the bean bags and we both decorated them with each child's name on it with fabric paint. Our little zebra ready to party with her big brother!Miss G with her cool shades and darling giraffe hat : ) She even got to dangle her long legs in the pool!

Owen and Grandpa Norm The cupcakes Nana and I worked so hard on before the party!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OWEN, WE LOVE YOU!!! XOXOXOX

Happy Birthday Owen!!

Owen's actual birthday was a fun filled day of Mommy and Daddy time. He spent the morning at My Gym, (a fun place for kids to jump around and play) while I had to work. They met me at the zoo (Owen's favorite place) when I was done. After saying "hi" to all the animals and sliding down the kids hill on a piece of cardboard 100 times, we headed home for his next surprise!

We got home, and waited for his present from Nana and Pappy to be delivered; His first real big boy bed!! It's beautiful cherry wood with drawers and a trundle bed underneath. It was a hit! After that big day, I made his favorite, mac and cheese with broccoli for dinner, had ice cream and three wishes for dessert : )

He loves his Leap Frog movies!
Kid's tool set to help fix things around the house ; )
He liked this one! Checking out his new drill! He also got a train set to add to his tracks he already has. Adam thought it would be funny to look super confused on how to build these tracks. : ) This picture makes me laugh!Emily wanted to test out her big brother's new bed as well! She liked it : )
The first night he was so excited, and then when it came down to actually going to sleep, he crawled into his old bed and fell asleep : ) The next night, and ever since, he has been in his new bed having sweet dreams and is very happy.

Emily LOVES her brother.... And he loves her.Getting a bed time story read to him from Nana.
One last story from Daddy.Happy Birthday Sweet Owen!!! We love you! xoxoxox

I hope all his wishes come true!

Caught!

This picture makes me laugh. It looks like these partners in crime just got caught red handed! They were not getting in trouble here, but I am sure the days are not far ahead where I will see this look a little more often : ) These guys are going to be a team, I can tell already. Adam and I should be scared!

SMA BLOG PARTY

Today is the first ever “SMA BLOG PARTY!” What does this mean?

It is simple — bloggers come together to 1) Talk about SMA, 2) Put a face to this awful disease, and 3) Help WIN $20,000 for SMA research by clicking here: http://www.voteforsma.com/ .

If you are even vaguely familiar with my blog, you know that we are 100% behind helping to find a cure for SMA. Gwendolyn and her parents are dear friends of ours and we are committed to doing whatever we can to help them.

Please help today by participating in the SMA Blog Party. Join the party AND:

1. Repost this post on your Blog, Facebook, Twitter
2.cast your vote for The Gwendolyn Strong Foundation on http://www.voteforsma.com/

What is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA):

SMA is the leading genetic killer of infants and young children. It is a terminal, degenerative disease that results in the loss of nerves in the spinal cord and the weakness of the muscles connected with those nerves. SMA impacts the ability to walk, stand, sit, eat, breathe and even swallow. The mind and spirit are no different from that of a healthy baby, but the body eventually fails. Typical babies with SMA Type 1 have a life expectancy of between one and two years and they require around-the-clock medical assistance and monitoring

Here is a typical day in the life of Gwendolyn:
■7:00am ~ the night nurse leaves and we get up to start Gwendolyn’s day

■7:30am-8:00am ~ we wake Gwendolyn up (the smile on her face is priceless when she wakes up); we administer respiratory treatment #1 for the day; we take her off of bi-pap

■8:00am-9:00am ~ we move Gwendolyn and her machine cart from her bedroom to the family room for the day; feeding time #1 (100cc’s fed over 1 hour via g-tube)

■9:00am-10:30am ~ this is usually playtime; stretching and massage to keep her joints and muscles healthy; bath time (aka water therapy) every other day (which she absolutely loves!!!)

■10:30am-11:30am ~ we usually put her back on bi-pap; nap time if we can get her to take one

■11:30am-12:00pm ~ we take her off of bi-pap; we administer respiratory treatment #2

■12:00pm-1:00pm ~ feeding time #2 (100cc’s fed over 1 hour via g-tube)

■1:00pm-2:00pm ~ this is usually when nurses or therapists come to check up on Gwendolyn and give her therapy (2-5 times per week); we put her back on bi-pap; or sometimes this is playtime

■2:00pm-3:30pm ~ we take her off of bi-pap; playtime; stretching and massage

■3:30pm-4:00pm ~ we administer respiratory treatment #3

■4:00pm-5:00pm ~ feeding time #3 (100cc’s fed over 1 hour via g-tube)

■5:00pm-6:00pm ~ we put her back on bi-pap; nap time

■6:00pm-7:30pm ~ we take her off of bi-pap; playtime; stretching and massage

■7:30pm-8:00pm ~ we administer respiratory treatment #4

■8:00pm ~ we put her back on bi-pap; bedtime

■8:00pm-9:00pm ~ feeding time #4 (100cc’s fed over 1 hour via g-tube)

■10:00pm ~ feeding time #5 (400cc’s fed over 9 hours — all night — via g-tube)

■10:30pm ~ we transfer Gwendolyn and her machine cart from the family room to her bedroom for the night and get her settled for the night

■11:00pm ~ one of Gwendolyn’s night nurses arrives, we give a report of the day, and get things ready for tomorrow

■11:00pm-7:00am ~ the night nurse monitors Gwendolyn, suctioning and rotating her sleeping position as needed throughout the night

■2:00am ~ we administer respiratory treatment #5

Nobody should have to go through this, especially a child.

Please help us get the word out about this awful disease and join our blog party!
